What is a travel ban in the UAE?
A travel ban is an order that is circulated to every airport, seaport and land border in the UAE. If your name is on it, immigration will stop you at departure, even if your visa and passport are valid. Bans are issued by courts and the Public Prosecution, not by private parties, but they are very often requested by creditors, employers, banks or a former spouse.
A ban does not mean you have been convicted of anything. In most cases it is a temporary measure that protects someone's claim while it is decided or enforced. Knowing which type of ban you have is the key to removing it, because each type is lifted in a different way.
The main types of travel ban
| Type | Who issues it | Legal basis | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civil or commercial | Civil court or execution judge | Article 324, Civil Procedure Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 42 of 2022) | Unpaid debts, loans, rent, contract claims |
| Bounced cheque | Execution judge | Commercial Transactions Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 50 of 2022) with the Civil Procedure Law | A returned cheque enforced as a writ of execution |
| Criminal | Public Prosecution or criminal court | Article 99, Criminal Procedure Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2022) | An open criminal complaint or investigation |
| Fines enforcement | Public Prosecution | Criminal Procedure Law | Unpaid criminal fines |
| Family (children) | Personal Status Court | Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 on Personal Status | Preventing a child from being taken abroad without consent |
When can a creditor get a civil travel ban?
A civil travel ban is not automatic. Under Article 324 of the Civil Procedure Law, the judge looks at several conditions:
- there is a serious reason to fear the debtor will leave the UAE to avoid paying;
- the debt is generally AED 10,000 or more, although maintenance, labour and some other obligations follow different rules;
- the debt is due, certain and not conditional, or the judge can make a provisional estimate of it;
- where the amount is not fixed, the creditor may have to provide a guarantee approved by the court.
A ban can be ordered before judgment, without notifying the debtor first, and the judge can order the debtor's passport to be deposited with the court. For a company debt, a manager or partner is not banned automatically: the court must look at their personal responsibility.

How to lift a travel ban, step by step
- Identify the banFind out which court or prosecution office issued it, the case or execution file number, and the amount claimed.
- Choose the routeDecide whether to pay, settle, provide a guarantee or challenge the ban, depending on whether the claim is justified.
- Pay or depositPaying the debt in full, or depositing the claimed amount in the court treasury, is the fastest way to lift a civil ban.
- Offer a guaranteeA bank guarantee or a solvent personal guarantor accepted by the judge can replace the ban while the dispute continues.
- Get the creditor's consentA written settlement or waiver from the creditor allows the court to lift the ban.
- Challenge itA grievance against an execution judge's order must generally be filed within 7 working days. A ban also falls if the creditor does not file the main case within 8 days of a pre-judgment ban, does not start execution within 30 days of a final judgment, or leaves the execution file inactive for 3 years.
- Confirm removalAfter the court orders the ban lifted, confirm it has been removed from the immigration system before you travel.
Criminal travel bans
In a criminal case, the Public Prosecution can impose a travel ban and keep your passport during the investigation. Being released or granted bail does not automatically lift the ban. It usually stays until the investigation ends, the court gives a final judgment, or the Public Prosecutor accepts a request to lift it against a guarantee. In cases that depend on a victim's complaint, a settlement and waiver can end the case and the ban with it. A lawyer can also ask the prosecution to allow travel for a specific reason, such as medical treatment or a family emergency, against a guarantee.
Travel bans on children
A parent can ask the Personal Status Court to ban a child's travel where there is a risk the child will be taken abroad without consent. Taking a child out of the UAE without the other parent's consent or a court order is now a criminal offence under the 2024 Personal Status Law, with a fine of AED 5,000 to AED 50,000 or imprisonment. If one parent unreasonably refuses consent, the court can authorise travel for a limited period.
How long does it take?
| Step | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
| Creditor's request for a civil ban | Often decided within a day or two |
| Lifting after full payment or deposit | Usually 1 to 3 working days |
| Lifting against a bank guarantee | A few days to 2 weeks, depending on approval |
| Grievance against the ban | Filed within 7 working days; decided in days to weeks |
| Criminal ban | Usually until the case or investigation ends |
These are typical estimates. Removal from the immigration system can take an extra day after the court order.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check if I have a travel ban in Dubai?
Use the Dubai Police app or website with your Emirates ID number. It is free and shows travel bans from financial cases in Dubai. For other emirates or criminal cases, check with the Public Prosecution or the relevant court.
Can I get a travel ban for a credit card or loan debt?
Yes. A bank can ask the court for a travel ban, usually where the debt is AED 10,000 or more and there is a risk you will leave without paying.
Can a bounced cheque lead to a travel ban?
Yes. A returned cheque can be enforced directly, and the holder can ask the execution judge for a travel ban while the amount is unpaid.
How can I lift a travel ban quickly?
For a civil ban, the fastest routes are paying the debt, depositing the amount in court or providing a bank guarantee accepted by the judge.
Does bail lift a criminal travel ban?
No. Release on bail does not automatically lift a travel ban. It usually stays until the case ends unless the Public Prosecutor agrees to lift it.
Can I be stopped at the airport without knowing about a case?
Yes. Civil bans can be issued without notifying the debtor first, so people sometimes find out at the airport. Check your status before travelling if you have any dispute.
Can an employer put a travel ban on an employee?
An employer cannot ban you directly. It can only ask a court for a ban as part of a claim, and the court must agree that the legal conditions are met.
What is the deadline to challenge a travel ban?
A grievance against an execution judge's order must generally be filed within 7 working days.
Does a travel ban expire?
A civil ban falls if the creditor does not file the main case within 8 days of a pre-judgment ban, does not start execution within 30 days of a final judgment, or leaves the execution file inactive for 3 years.
Can a lawyer lift a travel ban while I am abroad?
In many cases, yes. A lawyer with a power of attorney can settle the claim, deposit the amount or file a grievance on your behalf.
